Name origin:

Robinson was born Walker Smith Jnr. He attempted to enter his first boxing tournament at the age of 15 but was unable to but was told he needed to first obtain an Amateur Athletic Union membership card. Unable to obtain AAU membership until he was 18, he borrowed the birth certificate of his friend Ray Robinson and obtained membership in that name. Subsequently told that he was "sweet as sugar" by a lady in the audience at a fight in Watertown, New York, Smith Jr. became known as "Sugar" Ray Robinson.

Name origin Sugar Ray Leonard:

Sugar Ray Leonard (1956 - ) is no relation to Sugar Ray Robinson. He was named Ray Charles Leonard after his mother’s favourite singer. "When I first started, I used to fight like Joe Frazier. I would come in low, bob and weave, and I knocked out many guys like that. I straightened out when I saw Muhammad Ali, when I started studying Sugar Ray Robinson." Leonard's reverence for Robinson ran so deep that he eventually took the nickname "Sugar Ray," which stuck.
